Nau d’Orient

In December 2001, I was commissioned by the town of St. Feliu de Codines to create a nativity scene for the village square. The space available was the central part of the square, and the requirements were to include an Abies x masjoanii and a traditional nativity.

I proposed a modular and removable nativity scene that would integrate the fir tree as part of the installation, making it adaptable to any location. It was named “Nau d’Orient” (Orient Ship).

It represents a ship carrying the Nativity, where the large fir serves as the main sail and a smaller fir as the foresail.

The structure has four good viewing sides: the front is led by the small fir, and the back is closed off by two interlaced “pota d’oca” (goose foot) frames in the French style. This allowed me to create elevation differences and play with the terrain’s height. I used reclaimed materials throughout.
